A motion introduced in the Dutch House of Representatives on 23 September 2026 asked the government to pursue a ban on gambling advertising both online and offline. It also asked for stronger enforcement against advertising by illegal operators.
What the existing restriction covers
The Netherlands already restricts untargeted advertising for remote gambling. In March 2026, the Kansspelautoriteit published guidance explaining when online and on-demand media advertising can still appear under strict conditions. A broader ban would therefore be a different step from enforcing the existing restrictions.
What happened to the motion
The text explains a concern that advertising could shift into other gambling categories if restrictions applied only online. The House rejected the motion on 29 September 2026. It received 64 votes in favour, short of the 75 needed to pass. The vote left the existing advertising rules in place.
