What Great Britain’s statutory gambling levy funds

Great Britain’s statutory gambling levy replaced voluntary industry contributions. Its rates vary by licensed activity and the funding has defined uses.

Great Britain’s statutory gambling levy replaced the previous voluntary system of industry contributions. The Gambling Commission collects and administers the levy. The government sets its policy direction and identifies research, prevention and treatment as the purposes of the funding.

There is no single rate for every activity

The method and rate depend on the licensed activity. Comparing one rate across all gambling businesses can therefore be misleading, particularly where a group has more than one licence or offers several products.

A funding rule, not an account charge

The statutory levy is an obligation in the licensing framework. It is not the same thing as a fee charged to a player for making a payment or withdrawing a balance. The levy’s effects are better assessed by looking at how funds are allocated and what services or research they support.
